Built in the 1880s by an Italian immigrant family, the original hotel was a typical three-story building with lodging on the upper floors and retail stores on the ground floor. Following the great earthquake of 1906, unfortunately, most of the North Beach area was destroyed – but historic records show that it was restored to its original beauty.
As it stands today, The Bohème has 15 specially appointed rooms, each with an en suite bathroom. There are rooms with a view of Columbus Avenue, and others that are nestled in the interior of the hotel for added quiet and privacy. The hotel features an eclectic mix of literary and visual motifs, replete with a majestic staircase and strong, inviting colors and patterns. Sherry is served every afternoon in the hotel lobby and the hallways are lined with artist/poet/photographer Jerry Stoll’s collection of black and white images, all taken in North Beach during the late 50s and early 60s.
One of Hotel Bohème’s most notable features is its congenial and knowledgeable staff, many of whom live in the city and have been with the property for years. Visitors return for the warmth, hospitality, intimate experience, and personal attention they receive.
The hotel’s North Beach neighborhood offers an array of restaurants, cafés, and shops right outside its front door. Truly a gem of a property in a dazzling city, Hotel Bohème is a unique destination for people from all over the world. Ask at the front desk for a copy of the Hotel Bohème Walking Tour to get a real feel for the neighborhood and see some of the most interesting local spots and sites.
