Cassava is a beloved French-Californian neighborhood bistro by a husband and wife team, Chef Kristoffer Toliao and Yuka Ioroi opened on March 5, 2012, on Balboa St in the Outer Richmond, starting as an 8 seat cafe, moon-lighting as a pop-up tasting menu restaurant with a “no-fire” kitchen utilizing only electric equipment and induction burners. During the 10.5 years at the original location on Balboa St, Cassava received praises from all areas, including SF Chronicle, San Francisco Magazine and Eater SF, not only for its creative cuisine by Chef Kris Toliao, but our pursuit of equitable restaurant operation. In October 2022, Cassava moved to its current location in North Beach, expanding the seating capacity by 3 times with a now kitchen with fire, and a beautiful “blue cheese” marble bar. With the signature 3 course prix fixe menu dinner, fun a la carte selection including Kris’s burger and fried chicken for lunch and dinner, Cassava is quickly becoming North Beach’s new favorite place to dine any time of the day. Since the move, Cassava made it on the Eater SF list of best new openings in San Francisco. Our longtime effort towards equitable restaurant operation was recognized by the James Beard Foundation, choosing Yuka Ioroi and Kris Toliao as semi Finalists for Outstanding Restaurateur category, the only ones in Northern California.
